The Kapatirang Claretiano Inc. (KCI), in partnership with peace and literacy NGO Kristiyano-Islam (Kris) Peace Library (www.krislibrary.com), has raised P13,000 which they spent on medicines, vitamins, bottled mineral water, fresh underwear and other basic necessities to be distributed to the typhoon victims.
“This is just the initial help as ex-Claretian priests and seminarians here and abroad are set to send in more financial help in the coming days,” said ex-seminarian Armand Dean Nocum, KCI president and founder of the Kris Peace Library.
Former Claretian Priest Paul Polintan, KCI vice president, revealed that one KCI member – Leopoldo B. Zerrudo Jr. – was himself affected by the flood in Cagayan de Oro but that he is now okay and is leading the joined KCI-Kris relief operation in the area.
Nocum thanked donors from abroad to include Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO) Director Joselito Elvena and MECO personnel Hermel Mendiola who collectively donated P8,616. Former KCI President Auggie Caddua gave P2,000 while anonymous Kris Library donors donated the rest.
Both Nocum and Polintan promised to raise more funds and collect books and textbooks for schools that were affected by the flood. KCI and Kris Library – in cooperation with the religious order founded by Saint Anthony Mary Claret – established three libraries in Claret Mission Centers (CMCs) and day care centers near a Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) stronghold in Zamboanga Sibugay; and in a resettlement area for Typhoon Ondoy victims in Rodriguez, Rizal.
Kris Peace Library, which is out to fight the culture of guns and violence in Mindanao through books and education, has thus far established five Kris Libraries—some of which provide free use of computers and computer lessons to poor Christian and Muslim kids. It has 101 scholars in Zamboanga City.
Nocum said that those who wish to donate cash to the KCI-Kris Library cause may do so by depositing in the account of Paul Barbasa Polintan at the Bank of Philippine Islands with current account number 3945-8037-53.
