The Dumb Country Boy Who Loved to Read

Today, I celebrate one more blessed and “bonus” year in my natal day by recalling this story I’ve heard a long time ago.

A young couple was one day gifted with a baby boy. Although excited about their first-born, the couple soon enough realized -- with great sadness and tears in their eyes -- that their boy was born quite sickly.

For one, the boy was born premature – just seven months old. He was the size of a rat. He had to be placed in an incubator. The primitive technology then burned his skin, making the color of his tender skin look, well, as black as that of a rat.

The boy proved to be a fighter and survived. Later, he grew up skinny and somehow seen as a slow-learner. Still, the couple was only too happy to see him grow up alive. It helped that a quack doctor advised the couple to make the boy regularly drink a special brew of flying lizards, snakes, iguana and other creepy animals to build his stamina.

Soon, the couple had two more sons. Unlike the eldest boy, the younger siblings were robust, muscular, taller and even smarter. Entering public school in Grade 1 with his second brother, the boy found himself seated in the row of slow-learners. On the contrary, his younger brother was the smartest kid in the class. The third brother also proved to be equally smart.

Having no electricity in the barangay, the parents devised a way to entertain themselves while at the same time teaching their boys numbers and alphabetical lessons by candle light at night. They placed the boys in contest among themselves in reciting the alphabet and doing addition, subtraction and multiplication table exercises. Alas, even at home the younger brothers were beating their elder sibling and the eldest boy would only cry in embarrassment.

Even in reading, the elder boy managed to learn to read well only at Grade 4, far behind his elder brothers. However, it was at this stage when things started turning around. Having discovered the joys of reading, the eldest boy began to see his mind literally sucking up knowledge. There seemed to be no end to his insatiable thirst for reading. He was particularly interested in reading about the biographies of great men – Einstein, President Theodore Roosevelt, Henry Ford, Mahatma Gandhi, President Abraham Lincoln, Edison and all the movers and shakers in the world.

The boy finally realized that there is no limit to what the human mind can achieve. It dawned on him that his mind can very well compensate for his weak and sickly body. His mind was really on fire with ideas! One time, he nearly literally set their wooden house on fire when he fell asleep while reading and the candle placed on his chest fell and set his beddings aflame!

He loved so much to read the old encyclopedias and was quite frustrated that his dad – who could afford to have an arsenal of firearms and grenades – did not buy one for the family. Fortunately, an auntie – a librarian – allowed him to borrow and take home volumes of the Collier Encyclopedia from the public elementary school. And those he read from cover to cover. As he was too weak to carry the books physically, he loaded them into the “kariton” or cart that he pulled to and from school as the boy was tasked to mind the small grocery or “sari-sari” store near the school. People were amused seeing volumes of encyclopedia along with jars of Chiclets, Tarzan chewing gums, Hall candies, Champion and Hope cigarettes and local pastries in the kariton.

Needless to say, that “dumb” boy eventually made something of himself somehow. Although born in a province and from a poor family, his readings gave him wings to fly and excel in school; and he managed to land a good job in Manila. Fortunately, his line of work brought him fame, allowed him to go places all over the world, and got him to mingle with presidents, senators, congressmen, mayors, billionaires and all the kinds of people he only read about while growing up in a barrio located close to a terrorist-infested island.

Amused and thankful at how life turned out for a dumb provinciano boy, he decided to give back his blessings to God for introducing him to life-saving books. He started collecting books and educational materials from his influential and rich friends in Manila and distributed them to poor kids in the provincial barrio he left behind. He started distributing the books on Sept. 7, 2001. The books were donated by Sen. Loren Legarda.

He called this project  “Kariton Y Libro” (Chavacano for “cart and books”). The movement later on became known as the “A-Book-Saya-Group (ABSG)” and now finally – the “Kristiyano-Islam Peace Library (Kris).”

Yes, that boy is fondly called “Arnie” and yes, I am that dumb boy. I am no longer a boy, but still dumb and idealistic in believing that I can really raise P1 million to finally constitute the Kris Library advocacy into a full-pledge foundation.

After 11 years of giving away books, school supplies, scholarships, computers and building libraries in what is still operated as a family-led endeavor supported by relatives, friends and business clients, we at Kris believe it is now time to turn the life-changing mission and operation of Kris to our dedicated supporters, donors and volunteers to ensure that it will become a strong and stable organization; and continue to exist and help poor children long after I am gone or even after my family shall have gotten tired of it.

But then, who knows, I might just pull it off with all of your help out there. It’s a birthday wish—an impossible dream worth fulfilling. We are going for it convinced of the importance of books and the need to continually reach out to poor kids out there whose minds are just waiting to be cracked open by a donated book, a donated computer or a Kris library in an isolated place somewhere in the mountains.

I truly believe in the value of books because I am one such dumb provincial boy empowered by books.

(If you share my dream and believe the books that worked for me – and the books that worked for you – can help raise a generation of bright, patriotic and progressive Filipinos, kindly go to  http://www.gofundme.com/wgnss to donate any amount to help us raise P1 million for us to convert Kris into a foundation. If you prefer to give your donation through other means, kindly email me at zamboyo66@yahoo.com so I may give you our address and bank account. Sharing this message to friends who can help will really be a good birthday gift to me. Thank you very much!)

The first library to benefit from the books we brought from Manila via the Kariton Y Libro project was my old alma mater -- the Manicahan Central Elementary School in Barangay Manicahan, Zamboanga City. The date was July 7, 2001. It was also the first time for Kris Administrator Arizza -- then 7 years old -- to deliver a speech in public and outside of the school campus. Looking on is my auntie and principal, the late Nitz Barredo.

KCI @ 7: Building Bridges Towards KCI Members, The CMF & The Filipino People

This is a speech I delivered at the 7th General Assembly of  the Kapatirang Claretiano Inc, a SEC-registered non-stock, non-profit association of former priests and seminarians of the Claretian missionary order (who are identified by the initials CMF, Cordis Mariae Fili in Latin, meaning Sons of the Immaculate Heart of Mary). Please read on to see how even as laymen, we continue to fulfill our pledge to serve God, our founder Saint Anthony Mary Claret and God's poor people!

Buenas tardes hermanos Claretianos.

Congratulations to us all for making it to our 7th year!

Truly, the spirit of Saint Anthony Mary Claret is with us as we have successfully used all possible means to make the Kapatirang Claretiano Inc. a respected association, a band of brothers that we can all be proud of.

But the best is yet to come!

Today, dear brothers, let me present to you my SOKA – not SONA but SOKA -- State of KCI Address.

This past year, we have truly rekindled the KCI spirit and created a very strong impact in our mission to “bridge lives” among our members; strengthened the bridge towards the Claretian community; and created a stronger bridge between KCI and the Filipino people and nation as a whole!

With the help and support of each and every one of you – including our brothers abroad -- we have shown that we can work shoulder to shoulder as a partner organization of the Claretian community.

Last year, KCI – in cooperation with the Kristiyano-Islam Peace Library (KRIS) -- helped set up three libraries and a day care center in Claret Mission Centers and the Claret Urban Poor communities in Sitio Bangkal and Tungawan in Zamboanga Sibugay. These beneficiary communities are known conflict areas located right in the middle of the feuding camps of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF); and the 18th Infantry battalion of the Armed Forces of the Philippines.

KCI has indeed planted its flag in one of the country’s most violent and poorest areas!

Thanks to Fr. Manny Abogado, his parishioners at the Cardinal Santos Medical Center – who pooled in about P62,000 -- anonymous KCI and Kris Library donors, poor children in this virtual “no man’s land” are given a better future as they are now aided by decent libraries. They also received basic school supplies and snacks from KCI and Kris Library.

In a resettlement area for Typhoon Ondoy victims in Rodriguez, Rizal, we have also established the CUPA-KCI-KRIS Library where we have likewise given books, set up two computers and gave school supplies for poor children. And we again thank the parishioners of Fr. Manny, former KCI President Auggie Cadua, future Ambassador Charlie Macaranas; Fr. Paul Polintan for bringing a van full of books from the  Colegio de San Bartolome de Novalices; and anonymous KCI and Kris Library donors for their generosity.

In all these activities, we are clearly partaking of the mission of our CMF priests and brothers in our capacity as laymen. In doing so, we are also giving back to CMF whatever blessings it has given us in our start-up years here in Metro Manila.

We came from Claret, yet we are out of it because we now belong to the world outside where we excel in our careers, businesses; and family lives. And to show our care and sympathy for this world, KCI in a very big way threw its full support in the relief and recovery mission in helping the victims of Typhoon Sendong where we raised almost  P100,000 from our KCI brothers and Kris donors from all over the world.

At a crucial point in our country’s history where the Filipino people needed us the most, KCI became a conduit for the people of New Zealand who donated P51,000 to the flash-flood victims in Cagayan de Oro and Iligan. For this, we thank Fr. Carmelo Constantino Cruz for tapping the help of his parishioners at the diocese of Auckland to help our poor countryman.

And in perfect synergy with our KCI brothers in the area, we thank Bro.Toto Zerrudo and Leo delos Reyes for undertaking the difficult task of buying, identifying the beneficiaries; and organizing the distribution of the basic relief goods, t-shirts and schools supplies to the typhoon victims. This task was made even more impressive by the fact they themselves were unfortunate victims of the cataclysm.

It is worth mentioning that among the victims we helped with financial support is the family of our very own Em Lacaste, whose house was wiped out by the great deluge. Ganyan ang KCI, walang iwanan!

But there were also lots of fun in our first two years term. KCI also made a strong showing in the annual Claret Unity Cup. Our teams may not have won, but we did succeed in showing our never-say-die attitude. Talagang parang Ginebra ang KCI and they better watch out for us next year! KCI members also had a good time at the Kapatiran sa Kagubatan bonding moments in San Mateo, Rizal.

Amid all these accomplishments in helping our dear CMF community, assistance to our KCI members; and fellow Filipinos in need, our biggest accomplishment was to work for the stability of KCI as a non-stock, non-profit association. This past year, we have put our SEC papers in order, paid our association dues and reopened a KCI bank account to bring greater accountability to KCI.

I would like to thank our Vice President for Finance Fr. Paul Polintan for being steadfast in ensuring that we be as HONEST and TRANSPARENT as possible in handling our accounts. More than the donations made to us, KCI’s biggest treasure is its credibility in the eyes of its members and other who have entrusted us with their hard-earned donations. We may not have time to acknowledge all the donors to include Bros. Toby Garcia, Albert Alo, Arnie Catungal, Amba Gilbert Segara, Dexter Carreon etc, but we thank you all very much!

Along with Paul, I would like to thank all the board members of KCI who have been working very hard – one of them even got sick doing so – to help us live up to our program slogan to: Revitalize, Re-Strengthen, and to make KCI Relevant to the world.

We are just warming up, among our priority projects in the coming months – and in cooperation with the KCI-Pangasinan Chapter under Romano Bulatao – we will be setting up a marker at the altar dedicated to St. Anthony Mary Claret inside the Holy Family Parish Church in Santa Barbara, Pangasinan, where the first mission of the Claretians in the Philippines and Asia was set up in1947.

Our biggest goal and challenge in the second and last year of our term in KCI would be to strengthen and fully stabilize the operations of KCI as an organization as we pass it on to younger and hopefully more progressive and forward-looking young crop of KCI members.

Having shown our capacity to contribute to nation-building, having given back to the Claretian community by supporting their missionary works, we are now going to look inward and go back to our roots.

This year, we are going to initiate activities to increase the employment and business skills of KCI members and their families by holding skill-training and business-sharing activities.

Likewise, KCI is looking at ways to establish a cooperative type of business to bring financial stability to the organization and its individual members. One of the activities in the pipeline is the possible establishment of a school in Metro Manila.

Nothing is final yet and so in the coming days, we will be seeking suggestions and ideas from you to see how we can all can fuse together resources, talents, careers and businesses to come up with business projects that will gel and further bring us together; while at the same time benefitting us, our families and the KCI organization as a whole.

These are all plans and dreams, but that is where we all started with seven years ago and look where KCI is now seven years later. So, please join us in making all these plans happen! We can do it! Bravo de KCI!

Gracias a todo.

Dolphy's Legacy of Helping & Epi Quizon's Assistance to Kris Library Scholars

Epi Quizon, who is in orange in the middle, turned out to be very friendly and funny. He is a great golfer but he does not mind sacrificing a few precious shots for a good laugh!
I’ve never known nor have seen actor-comedian Rodolfo “Dolphy” Vera Quizon. But I’ve heard that Dolphy’s reputation of giving and helping small people in showbiz and total strangers is legendary.

Although Dolphy’s imprint in Philippine show-business is unequalled; I believe it is his “pusong mamon” and propensity towards helping ordinary people that that will keep his memory alive in the hearts of his Filipino fans.

We at the Kris Peace Library were fortunate to have indirectly benefitted from the Quizon family’s generosity – through Dolphy’s son Jeffrey “Epi” Smith-Quizon – who had been one of the strongest supporters of the Diether Ocampo Cup, an annual fund-raising drive for actor-businessman Diether’s advocacy Kabataan Inyong Dapat Supportahan (KIDS) Foundation.

KIDS Foundation is a long-time partner organization of the Kris Library, which was among the beneficiary organizations of the annual Diether Ocampo golf tournament.

During the 1st Diether Ocampo Cup, me and Ashia were fortunate to have played and even beat the four-some group of Epi Quizon who turned out to be very friendly, down-to-earth and of course, superbly funny. Epi could have easily won the game if his funny side did not get the better of him in a game meant to be played seriously.

Among all children, Epi clearly inherited Dolphy’s comic genius and also his re-known for helping the poor and total strangers.

The 1st Diet Cup resulted in Muslim and Christian scholars of the Kris Library receiving books and school supplies; and the 2nd tournament -- which was also participated in by showbiz personalities Monsour del Rosario, Samantha Lopez, Buboy Garovillo, Daisy Reyes, Bea Alonzo and Zanjoe Marudo – resulted in Diether turning over P13, 000 to help finance the operations of six Kris Libraries all over the country.

My daughter Ashia, who was nine years old during the time we played with Epi, also did the ceremonial tee-off along with Tagaytay Midlands Golf Club Chairman Willy Ocier.

Thus, as the country mourns for the passing away of a great comedian, we at Kris Library mourns for a man with a generous heart for the poor and total strangers. We extend our condolences to the Quizon family.
